Mobility & Strength

Move it or lose it.

Improving mobility and strength is one of the best benefits of exercise as you age. with the more you do the better you’ll move.

Benefits of exercise.

As you age, you can stand to lose up to 8% of your muscle mass every decade from your 30s if you do not remain active. This is the fundamental cause of and contributor to disability in older people. It doesn’t matter how old you are when you get started either, everyone can stand to reap the benefits from exercise to improve their wellbeing. As soon as you start moving and doing the right type of exercise your body responds to this and begins to build muscle to help support these new activities. Better strength and mobility may improve quality of life, increase the ease of completing daily tasks, reduce risk of injury and prolong independent living.

Improved mobility and strength can help in reducing symptoms from conditions like osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, posture related aches and pains, muscle loss from aging or post surgery inactivity and will also improve your coordination and balance. The stronger your muscles are around your joints the better your movement will feel with this added support.

Exercise physiologists design programs to improve your mobility and strength even in conjunction with other health concerns you may have. They utilise a combination of resistance training to build strength, a structured flexibility program and even clinical Pilates for better mobility if that’s what you enjoy.
